ACID / ALEIN

We manage the Australian Criminal Intelligence Database (ACID) and the Australian Law Enforcement Intelligence Network (ALEIN). ACID and ALEIN provides federal, state and territory law enforcement and other regulatory authorities with a framework to securely store, retrieve, analyse and share criminal information and intelligence on a national basis.

ACID/ALEIN is accessible by law enforcement and government partner agencies. These agencies contribute content to ACID/ALEIN, making this environment a truly national repository of criminal information and intelligence.

About ALEIN

ALEIN is a secure extranet that provides a gateway to ACID, the Violent Crime Linkage and Analysis System (ViCLAS) and the National Clandestine Laboratory Database, as well as acting as a secure channel for sharing criminal information and intelligence between federal, state and territory police.

About ACID

ACID operates through the ALEIN and is a single intelligence database that centralises national criminal information and intelligence. Features of ACID include:

  • text analysis and socio network analysis tools to enable law enforcement to better understand the criminal environment by analysing patterns within unstructured text, and to detect and map criminal networks
  • a centralised clandestine laboratory information repository and a standardised national approach for recording information collected at seizures, making it easier for police to contribute information from the field.

A recent upgrade of ACID will encourage law enforcement agencies across Australia to contribute a greater diversity of information and intelligence, making the database a highly valuable tool in fighting organised crime.
