Responses to organised crime
We are working with our law enforcement partners to fight serious and organised crime by understanding the criminal environment. Knowledge of changes in the social and criminal environments assists law enforcement and governments to determine future responses to organised crime.
The following issues will be priorities for developing a response to organised crime in the future.
Understanding changes in crime
Dynamics of the Australian economy and advances in technology continue to create opportunities for organised crime.
We facilitate a greater national understanding of, and capability to address nationally significant criminal issues. The information we collect and provide to other government agencies includes information about well—entrenched criminal activities or new areas of criminal exploitation. Understanding the changing criminal environment is critical to determining responses from Australian law enforcement.
Technology offers opportunities for the development of new methodologies and initiatives to detect and intercept organised criminal activity in sectors where visibility has previously been less possible.
Collaboration
In dealing with the current and emerging threats from organised crime, responses need to be flexible, innovative and forward-looking.
Collaboration between law enforcement, government, industry and the community is vital to Australia's response to organised crime. Collaboration between sectors will assist in developing strategies that combine the strengths of law enforcement professionals to effect regulatory and legislative change. Such partnerships will offer Australian law enforcement the tools and knowledge needed to improve crime fighting capabilities.
Increased public and industry awareness of important organised crime issues
Awareness and understanding of the threats of organised criminal activity will continue to be a key component of the fight against organised crime in Australia.
The impact of organised crime is felt by the Australian public in numerous ways. Increased public awareness of indicators of organised criminal activity may help prevent activity such as fraud and identity crime.
Specialised law enforcement strategies
Organised crime has the capability to resist law enforcement efforts. Law enforcement uses special tools including coercive powers, covert intelligence, surveillance and a range of specialised analytical and investigative techniques to overcome this resistance.
Law enforcement responses will, by necessity, continue to be predominately reactive and directed toward issues affecting single jurisdictions. However proactive and specialised law enforcement approaches are critical to the success of efforts to combat organised crime. This includes ongoing collaboration between state, territory and federal law enforcement agencies.
