Two men charged with trafficking 50kg of crystal methamphetamine (ice)22 January 2010

Joint Australian Federal Police, Australian Crime Commission, NSW Crime Commission, NSW Police and Australian Customs and Border Protection media release.

Two men have been arrested in Sydney by the Joint Organised Crime Group following the seizure of approximately 50 kilograms of ice which had been imported into Australia. They are due to appear at Central Local Court in Sydney today.

It will be alleged in court that a 47-year-old Chinese man and a 31-year-old man from Hong Kong took possession of the drugs after it arrived in Sydney from Melbourne yesterday.

On 12 January 2010, a consignment sent from China arrived in Melbourne. The consignment included a number of car parts which were later transported to Sydney.

The car parts were delivered to an address in Glendenning, Western Sydney, where the two men took possession of the consignment. It will be alleged in court the men removed the ice concealed within the car parts.

One of the men was arrested in Glendenning in possession of the drugs and the other man was arrested at Sydney Airport a short time later, as he was attempting to depart Australia.

Yesterday, search warrants were executed at four locations in Sydney and three in Victoria, during which a quantity of property was seized.

AFP Manager Sydney Office Commander David J Stewart said the success of this operation is a result of the collaboration between partner agencies in combating organised crime.

“It is estimated the 50 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine seized yesterday is valued at approximately $20 million. This quantity of methamphetamine is capable of producing about 50,000 street deals.”

Australian Crime Commission, Sydney Office Manager, Warren Gray said that a key to operations of this nature is the irresistible intelligence for all agencies to work with.

“This is a fine example of intelligence-led law enforcement tackling key players in the drug trade.”

Both men were charged with one count of Trafficking a Commercial Quantity of a Border Controlled Drug contrary to the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth).

The maximum penalty for trafficking commercial quantities of methamphetamine is imprisonment for life.

The Joint Organised Crime Group comprises of officers from the Australian Federal Police, New South Wales Police Force, Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Australian Crime Commission and NSW Crime Commission.
