Under limited direction, the Assistant Accountant is a key member of a teamresponsible for the effective and efficient provision of the Commission’s Internal Budgets, External Budgets, Statutory and Management Reports.
Key objectives of the position:
The principal accountabilities and responsibilities will include:
- Assist the Financial Reporting Team Leader The preparation of monthly / annual financial statements, management and validation of general ledger data; financial and non-financial information on a monthly basis, manage the administration and compliance process of Statutory Taxes such as, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT)
- Assist the Budgeting Team Leader with the development of internal and external budgets, including the costing of new policy proposals
- Prepare and review General Ledger journals and Reconciliations in accordance with the Agency’s financial control structures, systems and processes
- Management of the Agency’s Asset Management Program. This includes financial and budgetary management, policies and procedures, training and reporting in conjunction with the regional Asset Managers
- Management of the Agency’s Accounts Receivable function. This includes generation and receipting of invoices and debt recovery.
- Prepare and review the Agency’s BAS and FBT returns in accordance with Taxation Legislation
- Assist the Financial Reporting Team Leader monitor the Agency’s financial performance; provide strategic recommendations and advice to the Finance Manager and internal stakeholders on financial drivers and cost management
- Assist the Finance Manager and Financial Reporting Team Leader and other team members with ad-hoc projects as required
- Develop and enhance effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
Key Selection Criteria:
The following are the specific Selection Criteria for the role of the Financial Accountant:
- The capacity to work with a diverse range of people in a team environment in an equitable manner while independently managing responsibilities and contributing to organisational or team deliverables
- Demonstrated ability and experience in Fixed Asset and Taxation Management
- Sound knowledge of accounting principles and practices, FMO and general financial framework applicable to an agency under the FMA Act 1997
- Sound written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to represent the section in the provision of information and advice to customers and key stakeholders on financial systems related matters
- Sound knowledge and experience in Government financial reporting framework and in preparing monthly and annual financial statements
- Demonstrated strong skills with word processing, spreadsheet and financial management system applications; demonstrated experience with SAP financials or the ability to quickly acquire a working knowledge will be highly regarded
- Accounting qualification and progressing towards professional accounting qualification is highly desirable.
